Wildfires 🔥🌳🔥

For our tree unit, we learned about forest fires! We read a comic about Smokey the bear. Here is my summary!

In the beginning of the comic, a careless person started a fire. It spread to a lot of the forest and hurt a lot of the animals. Some of the people trying to prevent it got stuck and barely survived. When the fire was over, they got up and saw a badly burned bear cub on a tree. They brought him to a vet facility and he was treated. He became their mascot and reminded people that “ only you can prevent forest fires”

Next, we had to find 10 tree facts! Here are mine. ⬇️

  1. Trees don’t die of old age
  2. Their rings can predict climate change
  3. When you plant trees your energy cost can go down
  4. Some trees went to the moon
  5. Trees can communicate with each other
  6. They can battle insects
  7. They can reduce stress
  8. They can help you if you get lost in the woods
  9. More than half of tree species live in one country
  10. Trees improve water quality

Then, we made a poster! Here is mine. ⬇️

Last, here are the questions we had to answer. ⬇️

Why is it important to learn about trees and forests and the benefits we receive from them?

It is important because we need to know how much trees do for us and why we should respect them.

Who is responsible for conserving forests?

Park rangers

What are you doing to help? (talk about a specific idea or plan).

I am going to try to tell other people and not use as much paper

How can you encourage others to do the same?

You could make fliers to help tell people

Tree Name 🌳🌳

For our tree unit in LA, we are reading the book wishtree! The two main characters are named Bongo and Red. We picked trees on campus in the beginning of the year and here is how mine looked ⬇️

Here is it now ⬇️

We had to also find an animal nearby. Here is mine ⬇️

Then we had to name them! I named the crow Benchie because he was on a bench. I named the tree Bennie to go with benchie. We also had to research our names! Alice is a German based name and means “wisdom”. Then finally we had to write a dialog between the tree and critter. Here is mine ⬇️

🪶 it’s soooooo hot out here

🌳I know right

🪶I’m also having the WORST day ever

🌳 why?

🪶one of the 5th graders ran after me to try to “pet me”

🌳 ugh that’s awful

🌳one of the 8th graders tried to pick my fruit. It really hurt!

🪶that’s so annoying. I wish you could walk and we could both move together

🌳 who says I can’t walk……..

Tree Books 🌳🌳

In LA class, we learned about trees! For this we made tree books with a local artist, Peg Gignoux, her website: https://gignouxart.com/ To make the books, we first used a silk screen with some poems we wrote on them. We used a squeegee to squeegee the screen with paint. We printed this onto a piece mat board, cut out like a tree.  Next, we collected all kinds of leaves and flowers and used a gelli pad and Akua ink to make prints of our items. We also painted bug sheets of paper blue with watercolors. Then we made a college with our prints and used it for the inside of our book. We used other prints to make a landscape with trees for the “pages” of the book. We also decorated envelopes to put our writing in. We wrote a poem, a bucket list, and a piece to thank the people who have helped us in our life.

My Hopes for the World

A few things that I hope will change in the world are racism, climate change, animal cruelty, global fighting, and women’s rights. I would like for these things to change in the world because they are all really serious and many policies around these issues are unfair. This planet is for everyone and everyone matters. Everyone is a part of this earth and no one should be treated differently. It is not fair that the dominant culture just takes over and hurts the non dominant culture. Animals are the same way. They shouldn’t be treated poorly just because they are different. They should be treated well also because they are living creatures just like us. We also need to treat the planet better. If the earth wasn’t here, we wouldn’t be here either. We need to keep it clean and help it, otherwise we would suffer. All of these things need to change and I hope they will.

SALUTE TO MY ROOTS!

By: Alice Haney

Mom

My mom has helped me an astronomical amount in my life. I could not thank her enough. She has taken care of me when I’m sick, she has helped me when I have fallen down, and most importantly, she has always been there. One time, about a year and a half ago, I got salmonella and had to go to the hospital. My mom stayed with me all day and slept on a little chair in my room all night. She also has made a lot of other things possible for me. She takes me to the barn to ride every weekend and she gave me the opportunity to find Wesley, my pony. He has also helped me a lot because when I’m upset, if I go to him, he understands in a way. If I’m not upset he knows and he might just walk away so that he can stay and eat outside but if I am, he knows and he will let me go up to him and hug him for a little while. I will forever be grateful for what my mom has done for me and making sure I have Wesley in my life has been a big part of that.

Dad

My dad has also helped me a lot in my life. He has taught me life skills and he has helped me with other things too. One of my favorite things to do with him is help him build things outside. He gives me good constructive criticism and helps me be a better person. He always tells me that all he wants me to do is try my best and be a good person. He is not a very good cook, but he does make REALLY good lasagna. I normally don’t like lasagna but I will eat his. He also shows me how to care about people. Each day, he operates and saves many people and I will forever be grateful for how he shows me that a hero can be anyone. They don’t have to be the strongest or tallest. All they have to do is be a good person. Thank you for helping me be a better person.

Grandma

My grandma has made me better in so many ways. She has taught me to not worry all the time (because she does) and she has made me feel special. Even if I did the worst drawing ever, she always still put it on the fridge. She has taught me how to be grateful for what I have and she has taught me how to fix my mistakes. She showed me the world of art by always wanting me to make more. I am now obsessed with it and love to draw. It is a way to escape when I’m upset. Thank you for all you have done for me.

Grandpa

My grandpa has inspired me a ton. He has always been mindfully strong and thoughtful. He has always helped other people. He was a surgeon and helped someone every day. He has helped them all live better lives. He also one did surgery on a gorilla! I remember going in his office and seeing the picture of the huge, black, fuzzy gorilla, on the operating table, with my grandpa on the side getting ready to start the operation. I remember being so impressed and interested. He has also taught me to fish. He lives in Wyoming and ALWAYS fishes. I remember biking along the Snake River and one time when my family went to visit, we actually went on a day long fishing trip on the Snake River! It was so hot but I had so much fun! He has shown me the world of fishing and I will now always enjoy going out to fish. Thank you.

Mama

My grandma (I call her Mama) has helped me find things I like to do. She always cooks and makes the BEST chicken parm. She has also taught me how to make a lot of other things like pancakes. She has has always encouraged me to keep going no matter what. She has really bad arthritis in her hands but even if they hurt, she still keeps going. She also works at a school and helps kids every day. She has really taught me to be tenacious and keep trying no matter what gets in the way. Thank you for always being there.

Papa

My grandpa (I call him Papa) has taught me to work hard. He always works hard at his job and it pays off. Once, he worked so hard, his boss gave him a new car! He shows me how to appreciate things and be grateful. One of my favorite things to eat is his breakfast sandwiches. They are always SO good. He also makes really good burgers. I hope to be as good of a cook as he is. Thank you for teaching me how to work hard and how to always be appreciative of what I have.

This is how my book turned out! ⬇️

fingerprints!🕵🏼

In class, we are learning about fingerprints for our mystery unit! We all took out fingerprints using pencil graphite. Then, we identified them. Here is a picture of my paper ⬇️

Then we found facts about fingerprints! Here are mine ⬇️

  1. Loops are the most common fingerprints, adding up to about 60% of the worlds prints
  2. Whorls are the second most common, adding up to about 35% of the worlds prints
  3. Arches are more rare, adding up to only about 5% of the worlds prints
  4. Koalas have very similar prints to humans
  5. Some rare people are born without fingerprints
  6. Some ancient fingerprints have been found like one was found from about 1000 BCE on a clay coffin that had been indented on accident, then sealed into place
  7. It is very hard to remove your fingerprints
  8. People can also match palm prints just like fingerprints

Lady or the Tiger👱🏼‍♀️👸🐯

In Language Arts, we read the short story Lady or the Tiger. Here’s a copy if you would like to read it! (It’s really good🙃)

http://pshs.psd202.org/documents/kmahoney/1504223790.pdf

We all wrote an ending for the story because there was not much of one in the real one. Then we illustrated it! Here is mine:

The accused looked up at her and asked with his eyes, which one? The princess, fast but knowingly pointed to the door on the left. She also gave him the signal to wait a few minutes so he did. Then she jumped up and went. She ran bookedly through the back of the arena until she got to the back entrance of the doors. She had to move fast so that she wouldn’t get caught. She went to the door on the left with the girl. She took the knife from her dress and footedly walked across the floor to the girl, who was sitting in a chair. She raised it high and then plunged it into the back of the girl. The princess backed up as the girl stared at her with a blank, dead stare. Then she fell to the floor, blood rushing from her back where the knife still hung. She grabbed it and threw it into a pile of hay in the pen with a bull, who stepped on it and then stupidly ate it. Then she went to the next door where the tiger was. She let it out and it ran; smelling the blood and flesh from the girl. It rushed to the dead girl and started to rip her apart, eating her arms and legs. The princess laughed and went to the stables behind the arena where she had earlier put two big white horses. She hopped on one and then led the other with her. She went to the door on the left and sat there with the horses. Now you might be wondering, why is she in there with the tiger? Well, the tiger was so infaced with the dead girl, he didn’t care about the princess and the horses. The princess sat there for a few minutes then the door opened. She walked out with the horses while everyone gasped from seeing the bloody mess behind them with the tiger chomping away at the girl, although she didn’t look like much of a girl now that she was ripped to pieces. The accused got the message and hopped on the horse. They then kicked their horses and galloped through the open door of the arena into the now setting sun, and lived happily ever after.

Stock Market Game

In Language Arts, we are reading a book called The Westing Game. In the book the main character is a 12 year old girl who’s name is Turtle (yes I know, TURTLE). Anyway, she loves stocks so we all started playing a game. We all had 20,000 fake dollars to spend and we could pick as many as 6 stocks to invest in. We also made a logo. This is mine ⬇️

The stocks I invested in are

United Airlines: I chose this because I think that more people will fly places now because of the vaccine

CVS: I chose this because they are going to start giving out COVID vaccines

Beyond Meat: I chose this because I think that more people are going to start trying it and it will slowly grow

Exxon: I chose this because people will probably travel more now

Over The Break ❄️⛄️❄️

Over the break, my family normally goes to New Jersey and spends Christmas with my grandparents and cousins. This year however, we are staying home because of COVID. We are hopefully going to have a nice peaceful Holliday! My mom is working in the COVID ICU (intensive care unit) this week and gets out later today. My dad is a heart and lung surgeon and I am not sure if he is working on Christmas. Even though things are not near normal I hope everyone can have a somewhat normal Holliday!

Costumes!

This was mine and Wesley’s costume! He was SUPER at the show! We didn’t place in the derby but we were only a few points behind the person in last (they only placed to eight). For Halloween I’m not going to go trick or treating because of COVID but I will still try to have fun at our new house! (Yes I moved!) We wanted to get horses at our house so we moved to a place with more land. Anyway that’s what I’m doing for Halloween!
